The annual proof set went on sale and the first figures show that it continues to be more popular than the uncirculated coin set. Roughly 50 percent more sets were sold in the first few days at 296,379 as compared to the 200,764 for the uncs.

The proof set is already twice as popular as its five-quarter silver proof set cousin, which saw weekly sales of 7,261 sets, bringing the 2010 total to 143,072.

Naturally, the uncirculated coin set wasn’t standing still during the week. It added another 46,321 sets to its running tab, which now is 247,085.

One-ounce gold American Eagle bullion coin sales to the authorized purchaser network jumped by 36,500 this week. The fractional sizes didn’t move at all. For the silver American Eagle, 357,000 more were sold to bring the running July tally to 2,292,000 pieces.

Proof Buffalo coin sales crept higher by 799 coins to 23,643.

Sales of the two-roll Union Shield cent set stand at 136,411, up from 133,812.
