An open house was held April 17 to officially open the Numismatic Library of William A. Burd in Chicago.

Approximately 50 area coin collectors, dealers and numismatic researchers welcomed this addition to Burd’s business, Chicago Coin Company.

Burd was recognized in September 2009 with an American Numismatic Association President’s Award for his contributions to furthering and sharing the hobby by the creation of the library.

The library fills a void that has long-existed in the Midwest for a serious place of study and counts in its inventory more than 3,000 books covering both general and specific numismatic topics balanced from ancient to medieval to modern and also includes volumes on paper, ephemera and tokens/medals. Further holdings feature representation of both major and smaller auction literature and results plus periodical collections, some extending back for 100 or more years.

The library is available for use by anyone interested in numismatics whether it is a serious research project or a question about a specific item. The library is maintained on a volunteer basis by company employees and is normally available for use during the same hours of operation as Chicago Coin, which is located at 6455 W. Archer Ave. – two miles west of the Midway International Airport. The telephone number is (773) 586-4296.

The library is not open to the public, so it is advisable to call ahead to confirm availability. The collection does not circulate and all research must be done on the premises.

Those unable to visit the library can inquire for research-specific requests, questions and photocopies or other pertinent information. Requests will be answered as time permits.

The majority of the books are cataloged online. To view the listings, go to www.librarything.com and click on the “Search” box. Go to the “Members and Locations” section and type in “William A. Burd” and click “Search.” Click on “chicagocoin” and type in a book title, author or other key words to determine if the specific book is held in the library.”
