Heritage Preps First Physical Crypto Sales
What Heritage Auctions calls “a truly historic moment,” its World and Ancient Coins Department will begin an unprecedented event with the opening of its first physical cryptocurrency auction. The Otoh Collection, also referred to as “the most important collection of physical cryptocurrency to ever come to market,” marks the auction firm’s debut into the modern epoch of fusion numismatics.
The owner of the Otoh Collection approached Bitcoin in its infancy, interacting directly with those behind its creation. The collection consists of 250 un-redeemed and intact Casascius Bitcoins, 150 2013 Casascius Series 2 1 Bitcoin, and 100 2013 Series 2 0.5 Bitcoin, all of which were procured directly from creator Mike Caldwell. This collection offers a sense of connection to the birth of Bitcoin and to the beginning of the cryptocurrency boom.
Heritage has partnered with Numismatic Guaranty Company to certify and grade each Bitcoin, with 247 pieces obtaining “Gem” status. They “boast a brilliant and lustrous exterior, showcased by a range of golden hues,” and bear the Bitcoin icon. Each Bitcoin employs a unique holographic security feature to prevent fraud.
