Whitman show thrives despite Tammy

The Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expo was held Oct. 6-8 in Atlanta.

Exhibits of rarities and a joint Stack’s/American Numismatic Rarities auction drew people to Atlanta Oct. 6-8 for the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expo, despite a soaking from Tropical Storm Tammy during the first week of October.

On Saturday alone, more than a thousand people showed up to see the rarities on exhibit, including the 1913 Eliasberg-Legend Liberty Head nickel, according to expo general manager David Crenshaw.

“The Cobb Galleria is perfect for a big coin show,” he commented. “Dealers enjoy the top-quality hotels and restaurants nearby, and the public appreciates its free parking.”

Crenshaw said attendees were drawn to the free presentations on smart buying tips with Q. David Bowers, as well as the talk Bill Fivaz gave on detecting counterfeit gold, Frank Van Valen’s on collecting U.S. type coins and Ken Bressett’s discussion of money of the Bible. The Atlanta Sale, an auction held jointly by Stack’s Rare Coins and American Numismatic Rarities on Oct. 6, realized more than $1.5 million.

Besides the Eliasberg-Legend 1913 Liberty Head nickel, the expo’s coin exhibits included a unique set of Amazonian gold pattern coins, the finest known 1861 Confederate copper-nickel cent, the unique four-piece set of Nova Constellatio coins of 1783, $4 Stellas in gold and aluminum and a Roman coin jewelry ensemble.

Crenshaw noted that the foundation is being built for an even stronger event in October 2006.

Whitman will also be supporting the efforts of the American Numis-matic Association at the ANA National Money Show next April, which will also be held at the Cobb Galleria.
