How long the U.S. Mint will remain without a Mint director is an open question.
It took until nearly the end of Barack Obama’s first four-year term for him to send the name of a nominee, Bibiana Boerio, up Capitol Hill to the Senate last September, but no action was taken in the prior Congress, rendering the nomination moot.
Obama is required to renominate her or nominate somebody else to get the process started again.
The Mint director’s post is one of 5,000 political jobs appointed by the President.
Not having put someone in place in his first term is highly unusual. This allowed Ed Moy, appointed by President George W. Bush, to serve until he resigned in January 2011, nearly two years after Bush left office.
