A proposed civilian service medal honoring those fighting the War on Terror has the support of the Commission of Fine Arts.
The CFA met April 20 to review a potential design for the medal to be called the Global War on Terrorism Civilian Service Medal and gave the design its approval.
The Department of Defense has been working with the Department of the Army?s Institute of Heraldry on the proposed medal.
Several civilian service medals have been developed in the second half of the 20th century, including the Vietnam Civilian Service Medal, the Civilian Desert Shield/Desert Storm Medal and the Armed Forces Civilian Service Medal.
The Global War on Terrorism Civilian Medal has been created to recognize the contributions of civilian federal employees to the fight against terrorism.
Since other military services were interested in developing similar medals, the Department of Defense took the initiative to develop a medal for all DoD employees.
Now, the proposed design goes to the DoD program manager for civilian awards for approval. The DoD has the final say on the medal.
