Collectors in Utah want to see the state quarter series replaced by an entirely new design in 2009 rather than revert to the pre-1999 George Washington and eagle design for obverse and reverse.
This opinion was expressed in a meeting of 31 collectors called by the U.S. Mint Nov. 8, the night before the debut of the Utah state quarter in Salt Lake City.It was conducted by Gloria Eskridge, associate Mint director for sales and marketing.
A 10th anniversary set of platinum American Eagles was mentioned but price and sales date were not available. The set will feature two half-ounce coins, one proof and the other a reverse proof.
The Mint will expand Presidential dollar sets to include four- and eight-coin sets of uncirculated dollar coins.
In 2008 one commemorative program is authorized. The American Bald Eagle Recovery and National Emblem Commemorative Coin Act authorizes up to 750,000 clad half dollars, 500,000 silver dollars and 100,000 $5 gold coins.
Meetings of this kind are held before the debut of each state quarter.
