Final but unaudited sales totals for the 2009 Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece came in at 115,178 by the Dec. 31 sales deadline.

Offered virtually all year long at prices that fluctuated according to the price of gold, the one-ounce coin proved very popular with collectors and promotion houses alike.

The Mint took great care to assure there was the widest availability possible for potential buyers so that there would be no shortages in the marketplace. The initial one-coin per household limit was gradually raised and then removed altogether

As for the design itself, which collectors consider the most beautiful U.S. design ever, the depth of field achieved by the U.S. Mint for the coin proved to a new generation why the design would have had a stacking problem in 1907, but most collectors today would agree that stacking the Saint-Gaudens design in any form would be a shame.
