An 1876-CC 20-cent piece graded MS-62 by the Professional Coin Grading Service brought $264,500 at the Sept. 15 Pre-Long Beach Elite Auction conducted by Superior Galleries.
Overall, the 900-lot sale realized $2.7 million, including 15 percent buyer’s fees.
Another lot at the top of the prices realized list was an 1872-CC Seated Liberty half dollar graded PCGS MS-62. It brought $100,625.
A pattern half dollar of the same year, 1872, Judd-1200, graded Proof-65 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corp. sold for $60,375.
An 1821 Coronet Head large cent called MS-64 Red and Brown by PCGS attracted a $58,650 final bid.
Coming close behind was another pattern, a dollar dated 1872, J-1205, graded Proof-58 by PCGS. It realized $57,500.
Another large cent, an 1824 Coronet Head graded PCGS MS-64 Red and Brown, fetched $56,350.
The first gold coin to appear on the list of top lots is an 1839 Liberty $10 with large letters graded MS-60 by PCGS. When the hammer fell, it brought $50,600.
A bid of $49,450 purchased an 1813 Classic Head large cent graded PCGS MS-63 Brown.
Another gold piece, an 1800 Capped Bust $10 in PCGS MS-62, came in at $48,875.
Rounding out the top performers was an 1813 $5 gold piece called MS-64 by PCGS. It sold for $48,300.
Paul Song, senior vice president for auctions, called many of the lots “fresh numismatic material” not seen on the marketplace for decades.
