The U.S. Mint and the Washington, D.C., Metro Subway system announced Dec. 22 that more than 900 fare-card vending machines will now dispense dollar coins as change.

Mint Director Ed Moy was joined by Metro Chief Financial Officer Carol Kissal at a news conference in the Metro Center station to demonstrate how riders now will get dollar coins as change rather than quarters.
If a rider puts in a $5 bill and selects a $2 fare, they will get three dollar coins instead of 12 quarters in change, Moy said.
