Token society issues 2012 medal

This year, the National Utah Token Society has selected for its medal the themes of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key, Fort McHenry and The Star-Spangled Banner.

This year, the National Utah Token Society has selected for its medal the themes of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key, Fort McHenry and The Star-Spangled Banner.

The medal features an image of a waving American flag with two cannons below. The national anthem lyrics “Our Flag Was Still There” and years “1812-2012” are situated at the bottom.

It weighs 1 ounce and measures 39 mm in diameter.

A silver version of the medal is priced at $40. Copper, bronze and pewter versions each cost $7.50. Postage and handling is $4.

Designs of the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner commemorative coins were introduced to the public at a Dec. 14 ceremony in Baltimore. A silver dollar and a $5 gold piece will mark the writing of the National Anthem after author Francis Scott Key saw the 1814 naval bombardment by the British at Fort McHenry, which defended Baltimore during the War of 1812.

A poem written by Francis Scott Key, and later turned into the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” commemorates the defense of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 against the British. Soon, a $5 gold coin and $1 silver coin will do the same. The Commission of Fine Arts endorsed designs for both coins when it met July 21. It reviewed a total of 33 designs in making its selection
