A rare Fort Apache token from Arizona has sold for a record price.
In a private treaty with token dealer Mike Miller, longtime Arizona token collector Bob Temarantz purchased a 10-cent Fort Apache Post Exchange token for $7,500.
The token reads, “Post Exchange / 10¢ / Ft. Apache.” The reverse is blank.
It measures 23 mm in diameter and is struck in brass with incuse letters. It is in VF condition.
The Fort Apache Post Exchange was in operation from the 1890s to 1922 when the fort was abandoned by the military. It used tokens in commerce to supplement scarce coinage at this desolate Arizona location.
Fort Apache was founded in 1871. Its soldiers fought heavily in the Indian Wars.
Temarantz invites inquiries from readers on Arizona and other Western states’ tokens. Contact him by email at azsnipe@hotmail.com or write 2824 N. Bentley, Tucson, AZ 85716.
