Three rarities highlight sale
Three coins off the market for decades will highlight Bowers and Merena Auctions’ official Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Spring Expo sale slated for March 2-6 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
“The first of these three coins is a spectacular example of the key-date 1901-S Barber quarter that grades MS-68” according to the Professional Coin Grading Service, said Steve Deeds, president of the firm.
Deeds said it is the only MS-68 certified at PCGS or Numismatic Guaranty Corp. and there are none finer.
“Also part of the same consignment with the 1901-S Barber quarter,” Deeds said, “is an extremely rare branch mint proof 1879-O Morgan silver dollar certified Proof-64 in a first-generation PCGS holder, as well as a phenomenal 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 Round in PCGS MS-66.”
Collectors of Southern gold will be pleased that one of two named collections featured in the auction is the Cuyahoga Collection of Charlotte and Dahlonega Mint gold coins.
Deeds points out that it is ranked No. 2 in the NGC Registry for Charlotte gold and No. 1 for Dahlonega.
Among the highlights are an 1842-C Small Date gold $5 in NGC/CAC MS-63, an 1849-C gold $2.50 in NGC MS-65 and an 1854-D gold $2.50 graded MS-63 by PCGS.
The second named collection is the Julianna Rose Collection of Fugio Coppers. It is ranked by PCGS as the No. 2 finest set of Fugio cents with major varieties currently in existence and No. 3 for all time. It is No. 1 for NGC.
The Eliasberg specimen of the 1787 New Haven Restrike struck in silver is a highlight. It is certified MS-62 by PCGS.
In addition to U.S. coin offerings, Ponterio & Associates, Inc., the world and ancients auction division of Bowers and Merena, will offer world rarities.
“One of the most important highlights in this sale is an extremely rare 1876-A Greek 50 drachmai from a mintage of only 182 coins,” said Rick Ponterio, executive vice president. The coin, Fr-15 and KM-50, is certified AU-58 by NGC.
Ponterio will put 2,400 lots of world and ancient coins and paper money across the block.
