Superior nets $2.4 million

Two six-figure coins

Two six-figure coins ? an 1879 Flowing Hair $4 and a 1797 Capped Bust $10 ? helped Superior Galleries realize $2.439 million in its Santa Clara Elite Auction.

That figure, which exceeded the pre-sale high estimate, includes the 15 percent buyer?s premium.

Private collections like the Megan Collection and The Property of a Lady anchored the sale, held March 30-31 in conjunction with the Santa Clara Coin Expo. Superior was the official auctioneer.

?We attribute the unqualified success of this auction to the large number of fresh, private collections that were entrusted to us by our clients,? said Larry Abbott, executive vice president and COO for Superior.

Graded Proof-62 by Professional Coin Grading Service, the 1879 Stella brought in $138,000. The 1797 eagle, graded PCGS AU-55, fetched $126,500.

Other highlights included a 1909 $2.50 piece in PCGS Proof-65 condition that brought $47,150, and an 1851 Seated $1 graded PCGS MS-60 that realized $46,000.
