The Good River collection led a number of consignments that contributed to a $10.9 million overall total garnered by Superior Galleries' May 28-30 Pre-Long Beach Beverly Hills Elite Auction.
On its own the Good River collection realized $3,183,631, with bidding from floor and telephone bidders, and through Superior's Web site and eBay Live.
A double Panama-Pacific set from the Good River offering, the coins auctioned individually, sold for $768,401 while an 1879 $4 gold Stella, the Flowing Hair version, graded Proof-63 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., went for $149,500. A 1794 half dime from the Good River offering, graded NGC MS-67, sold for $143,750
A 1795 Flowing Hair dollar, two leaves variety, graded MS-63 by Professional Coin Grading Service, reached $112,700.
Other notable collections realizing between $250,000 and over $1 million in the Superior sale included the Wasatch collection of U.S. proof gold coins, the Springdale collection of early U.S. gold coins, the Rosene family collection, the Stanley Kanney collection, the James Newton Howard collection, the Bloomfield Hills collection and the Bayou Saint James collection.
Gold led the prices realized. A 13 leaves 1795 $10 gold piece, NGC MS-63, from the Springdale collection sold for $299,000, and an 1862 $20 Liberty, NGC Proof-64, from the Stanley Kanney collection realized $241,500.
A Springdale 1808 gold $2.50, NGC MS-62, went for $218,500 and an 1855 Wass, Molitor $50 gold slug, NGC MS-60, from the J.N. Howard collection fetched $161,000.
An 1821 gold $5, NGC MS-62, reached $155,250 and a no stars 1796 $2.50, PCGS AU-58, hit $126,500 while a 1797/5 $5 with large eagle, PCGS AU-55, finished at $120,750.
Outside of gold, an 1889-CC Morgan dollar, PCGS MS-64, brought $50,600 and a 1921 Peace dollar, NGC MS-67, topped off at $33,350.
An 1858-S Seated Liberty quarter, ANACS MS-61, went for $32,200 and a 1794 half dollar, PCGS VF-25, from the Rosene collection, garnered $27,600.
