The unofficial start of summer commences with Memorial Day weekend.

I am certainly looking forward to three days of activity that does not involve coin collecting.

Good weather is too valuable to waste in Wisconsin.

That is probably why coin collecting often is considered to be a wintertime activity.

Certainly staying busy indoors during a frigid winter day is appealing.

Equally appealing is going to a family barbecue to mark the beginning of summer.

I guess my point is, try to do everything.

Get your summer activities in.

But keep an eye out for numismatic happenings.

They do occur, even in the summertime.

Head out the door.

Sounds like a perfect summertime plan to me.

If you can find a way to get to the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Denver during the first week of August, that also would be a great summertime activity.

The ANA has long been aware that vacations most often happen in the summertime.

That is why the summer ANA show is larger than the one in the late winter.

I expect it will always be that way.

At some level, I am still amazed I don’t have to go back to school when September rolls around.

That is how ingrained summer habits can be.

So feel free to put coins aside from time to time.

Just don’t let them gather dust until September.

That is too long to wait for a good dose of numismatics.

Practice keeps you sharp.

Just as football teams have summer camps, coin collectors need to stay fit for the great things they plan to do come the autumn.

Enjoy this holiday weekend.

I know I will.

I will be back writing my blog come Tuesday morning.
