Collectors can have full control over coin and bank note designs at Photofunia, a Web site that customizes digital photographs with the user’s own photo.

Through the use of face detection technology, users are able to submit a mug shot and receive a digital image of their face on, for example, a holiday ornament, the cover of Vogue magazine, or as the face of Mona Lisa. A coin and a $100 bill are among the photo transformation options.

Once a user portrait is submitted and the digital photo option is selected, the user receives a transformed photograph that can be downloaded onto their computer on the spot.

Collector Philip M. Lo Presti of East Meadow, N.Y., came across the site and had his photo placed on the obverse of a coin that reads “United States” above and “2009” below. The results are shown.
The site is at www.photofunia.com.
