Coins recovered from famous shipwrecks are the main attraction at the Diablo Numismatic Society’s 10th Annual Contra Costa Coin Show. The event is slated for Oct. 10-11 at the Holiday Inn located at 1050 Burnett Ave. in Concord, Calif.
Tiburon, Calif., dealer Kagin’s will display and sell a variety of shipwreck coins. One of these ships, the S.S. Republic, sank off the coast of Georgia in 1865 with an estimated $400,000 in gold and silver coins. The coins were retrieved 138 years later in 2003. The club calls these items a “must-see” for all who attend the show.
More than 30 dealers will participate on the bourse. They will offer free appraisals and buy, sell and trade items such as U.S. and world coins, tokens, medals, casino chips, currency and stamps.
There will be prizes and free coin drawings, and Boy Scouts from a local troop will present a youth coin exhibit.
Show hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 11. Admission is $2 per person and good for both days. Children under 12 are admitted for free. Parking is free.
