Shenandoah quarter arrives at ceremony

The Shenandoah National Park quarter was officially introduced April 4 at the Front Royal, Va., Skyline High School.
Almost 1,000 people packed the auditorium. Roughly half were students from area schools.
United States Mint Deputy Director Richard Peterson said, “I am very happy to be in Front Royal, where my father attended Randolph-Macon Academy, to honor a state with such a rich history and promising future, a state my family and I call home.
“The Shenandoah National Park quarter emphasizes one of my favorite things about Virginia – its natural beauty – beauty that must be enjoyed and at the same time protected for future generations,” Peterson said.
Its reverse depicts a day hiker looking at the view from Little Stony Man summit.
Other dignitaries who spoke were U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Jim Northup and Molly Ward, Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources.
The All-County Elementary Choir sang.
The U.S. Mint reported that $30,000 of the new quarters were exchanged at face value after the ceremony.
Students attending came from A.S. Rhodes Elementary School, E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School, Hilda J. Barbour Elementary School, Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School, Ressie Jeffries Elementary School, Warren County Middle School, Skyline High School and Warren County High School.
