As of 4:40 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the U.S. Mint had sold 44,563 of a possible 50,000 John F. Kennedy Coin and Chronicles set.

It is the third such set in 2015 that includes a reverse proof Presidential dollar.

The first one, honoring Harry, Truman, sold out in 15 minutes June 30 with a mintage of 17,000.

The second one, honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower, also sold out in minutes accompanied by some Mint website problems, Aug. 11. Mintage was 17,000.

Kennedy has three times the mintage, but that has not deterred buyers.

In the first 10 minutes of sales, online buyers grabbed 25,000 of the sets. By the end of the first hour, 40,000 had been accounted for.

Shipping of the first 25,000 sets sold has begun. The remainder are on backorder with a likely in-stock date of Oct. 15.
