Sellout eludes Mint for another week

U.S. Mint sales of the American Eagle 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver set were up 995 over the prior week, but not yet a sellout.

A sellout still eludes the U.S. Mint for its American Eagle 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver set. As of Sept. 18, 19,200 of the 20,000 possible sets had been sold, up 995 from the prior week.

Some Numismatic News readers reported that they were canceling their orders for the set when the Mint announced on its Web site Sept. 15 that additional examples of the ?W? mintmarked uncirculated gold and silver one-ounce coins would be sold through its autumn holiday sales catalog mailed to customers Sept. 28.

Though it is unlikely to prevent a sellout, order cancellations will give other collectors more time to make up their minds as to whether to buy the two coin set featuring a 2006-W one-ounce gold American Eagle and a 2006-W one-ounce silver American Eagle.

Bullion coins ordinarily have no mintmark, but these, struck expressly for collectors, do.

Sales of the three-piece American Eagle 20th Anniversary Silver Coin Set featuring proof, reverse proof and uncirculated silver Eagles rose by 12,975 to 142,863 out of a possible 250,000. The proof and uncirculated coin bears the ?W? mintmark, while the reverse proof has a ?P? mintmark.

The three-piece American Eagle 20th Anniversary Gold Coin Set sold out its 10,000 set maximum Sept. 1 after going on sale Aug. 30. It features proof, reverse proof and uncirculated examples of the gold Eagles. All have the ?W? mintmark.
