The 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America will be commemorated in 2010 with the issuance of up to 350,000 silver dollars.
Designs for the new coin were revealed by the U.S. Mint Dec. 17.
On the obverse are three Scouts saluting, representing the Boy Scout and other related programs that were adopted years after the beginning of the original Boy Scout program.
Donna Weaver’s design shows a Cub Scout in the foreground with a Boy Scout and female Venturer. Weaver is part of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program.
Prominantly featured at the top of the obverse design is a slogan suggested by the Boy Scouts, “Continuing the Journey,” along with “In God We Trust” and “Liberty.”
For the reverse, the approved design shows the Boy Scout emblem and includes the motto “Be Prepared” as well as “E Pluribus Unum.
The reverse was done by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz.
A $10 surcharge will be added to the sales price of each coin to raise up to $3.5 million for the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation.
The foundation intends to offer grants to local councils working in hard-to-serve areas.
Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner approved the coin’s designs on Sept. 16 following a lukewarm response from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee had preferred other designs entirely.
