Sale nets $15 mill
The Whitman Expo official auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries realized more than $15 million.
The sale featured more than 4,200 lots of U.S. coins and more than 950 lots of U.S. currency, in addition to 2,800 lots of world coins and paper money from Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio.
It was held during the the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Winter Expo held Nov. 17-20.
The U.S. coin portion of the sale included Part 1 of the Dr. Samuel Teich Collection, which has been in private vaults since the 1950s. Leading the pack was a “Chapman” 1921 Morgan silver dollar graded Prf-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service. This unofficial Mint issue produced on orders from prominent Philadelphia coin dealer Henry Chapman crossed the block for $100,625.

Another standout of the collection was an 1864 2-cent piece with small motto graded Prf-64+ RB by PCGS. It commanded $97,750.
Another lot bringing top dollar in the sale was a 1792 half disme graded VF-25 by PCGS. It brought $109,250.
Among the paper money highlights was a lot also from the Teich Collection. A pack of 100 Large Size 1917 $1 notes with the vignette of “Columbus in Sight of Land” at left and the bust of George Washington at center, according to the catalog description, brought $54,625.
