A high-relief, wire rim Roman numeral date 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle in Professional Coin Grading Service MS-63 condition brought $24,150 in Scotsman Coins’ Feb. 12 auction in St. Louis.
That and other results added up to a cumulative total of $859,134.25, including the 15 percent buyer’s fees.
Coming close behind the Saint-Gaudens $20 was a 1905 Lewis and Clark gold dollar coin graded MS-66 prooflike by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. It garnered a bid of $21,275.
Next was an original Judd-60 1836 Gobrecht dollar that was graded Proof-30 by PCGS. It fetched $19,775.
John Bush said that the most surprising results were probably lots of unopened proof sets, which commanded bids well over estimates.
“All the collector series did really well,” Bush said.
