Dealer Frank S. Robinson will conduct his 79th mail auction of ancient and early coins with a closing date of Sept. 7. The sale will include 548 lots, most without reserves, and with bids to be reduced as competition permits. Robinson notes that reductions have averaged 15 to 20 percent in his prior sales.
Noteworthy among Greek coins in the sale are a EF/VF+ classic Athenian owl tetradrachm; a VF-EF/VF Baktrian tetradrachm of Euthydemos I; a rare Egyptian didrachm of Berenike II in VF/AVF; a nice Kroton Nomos with facing head and seated Herakles on reverse in VF; a rare Parthian tetradrachm, Phraates II, Sellwood type 17; a Thebes stater with Dionysos head; and a VF Syracusan tetradrachm of Agathokles.
The Roman section includes a quality Augustus tetradrachm of Antioch graded EF/AEF; a VF Tiberius denarius with toning; a Caligula As in AEF/VF-EF; a VF+ Claudius sestertius with Spes reverse; a high grade Clodius Albinus denarius; a VF Marius; a Carausius antoninianus graded EF; and a VF-EF Honorius solidus.
The auction also includes Byzantine and other early coinages, group lots, literature and a section of items offered at fixed prices.
Robinson holds about three such sales annually and says he tries to offer a broad range of material for advanced collectors as well as bargain hunters.
