Refunds offered by Mint for some 2004 pouches

Refunds are being offered by the U.S. Mint for 2004 Lewis and Clark Coin and Pouch Sets that contain a pouch from the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band of Ohio.

Refunds are being offered by the U.S. Mint for 2004 Lewis and Clark Coin and Pouch Sets that contain a pouch from the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band of Ohio. The band is not officially recognized as a band by federal or state government and so did not have the power to claim the pouches are American Indian products, the Mint says.

The Certificate of Authenticity will identify the maker of the pouch in each set. Pouches manufactured by recognized tribes are not included in the refund offer.

Persons who want to return the entire set can get a refund of $130, which is issue price plus $10 for shipping and insurance, or they can return just the pouch for a refund of $90.

The set features a proof Lewis and Clark silver dollar and a pouch. Current prices on the secondary market are below issue price, so returns are profitable based on market prices.

On the other hand, if enough pouches are returned, any remaining in collector hands might gain enhanced value.

Refunds can be sought until May 1, 2008. Send the set or pouch back to: United States Mint, Attn: Indian Arts & Crafts Return, 801 9th St., NW, Washington, DC 20001.
