Red River plans 50th celebration

The Red River Valley Coin Club’s coin show slated for Jan. 30-31 in Fargo, N.D., will mark a half century of bourse activity. For 50 years the local club has sponsored a coin show in Fargo or Moorhead, Minn., in the later part of January or early February.

This 50th annual show will again host more than 35 dealers from as many as five states with more than 50 tables available.

Club President Dave Quittschrieber expects this year’s show to be “one of the biggest and best ever.” Displays and exhibits will be expanded. Among the additional displays will be some of the finest known collections of tokens and currency from North Dakota, Minnesota and Maine, and 3-cent nickels.

A banquet to celebrate the milestone anniversary will be held Saturday night, Jan. 30, at the Doublewood Inn Hotel in Fargo, where the show has been held over the last 33 years. Featured speaker for the event will be American Numismatic Association President Cliff Mishler.

The anniversary is also being marked by a medal featuring the Red River Valley of the North. It is available for purchase for $6 per medal and is being produced in antique nickel, brass and copper. A limited edition of 50 silver medals are also planned to be struck.

The Red River Valley Coin Club will host the National Token Collectors Association’s national show over Labor Day Weekend in Fargo. Club Bourse Chairman Bob Hanna said he is pleased and excited that a national event of this size is coming to the city.

The club has sponsored a YN club, provided numismatic materials to local libraries, made school presentations and helped lobby to eliminate sales tax on coins and currency in North Dakota. It also hosts the North Dakota State Coin Show the third weekend in November each year.

Questions regarding the 2010 shows should be directed to Hanna by phone at (701) 373-8980 or by e-mail at bob@concorde-GA.com.
