From the Numismatic News 60th Anniversary Special Issue – By A.J. Verhaeghe • Swartz Creek, Mich.
Congratulations to the staff at Numismatic News for keeping the coin collecting hobby paper going for 60 years, keeping collectors informed about the hobby and numismatics at large.
The person who most influenced me and got me started collecting coins was my Dad. He was a newspaper carrier in Bay City, Mich., during the 1930s and definitely watched every cent he collected on his two paper routes.
Over the years I have collected cents through silver dollars focusing on U.S. coinage, getting some of my Dad’s doubles and purchasing other key and semi-key dates of the various series at coin shows, through NN Marketplace, the U.S. Mint and mail bids.
For one coin show at a local mall, Dad and I spent the afternoon together and he bought me a 1945 “micro S” Mercury dime, which has become one of my favorite coins. He has been gone a few years now, and I do miss his insight.
In June we were cleaning out some papers from his old desk and in the top drawer I saw a small silver shaped circle. It was an 1852 3-cent piece in very good condition, which fit into the type set that he had started and I’m still working on.
He always had the Numismatic News on his coffee table and reading the Numismatic News is a way I can stay connected to the one who most influenced me as a coin collector.
