Members of the American Numismatic Association attending the National Money Show March 16-18 in Charlotte, N.C., will see whether business or politics is the more important activity.
A candidate forum slated for 6 p.m. March 16 is becoming the focal point for board candidates and their supporters who are disillusioned with the current board of governors and the executive director.
Besides a 1913 Liberty Head nickel, another rarity once owned by George Walton, a Bechtler dollar, will also be put on display.
Attendees will be gauging electoral prospects as much by the number of people attending and their reactions as the positions candidates take. The election will be conducted by mail ballots that will be sent out to members at the end of May and the return deadline will be approximately six weeks later.
An ANA Town Hall meeting at 6 p.m. March 17 likely will also take on political overtones.
Heritage Auction Galleries will be conducting the official convention auction. The bourse floor will feature dealers from across the country. (.
Exhibits will feature a 1913 Liberty Head nickel that was owned by George Walton and which had disappeared from hobby view from 1962, when Walton was killed in a car accident, until his heirs brought it forward at the 2003 ANA convention in Baltimore. Three of the heirs will hold a two-hour Numismatic Theatre round-table discussion at 10 a.m. March 17. They are Ryan Givens and Cheryl Myers, a nephew and niece, and Gary Myers, Cheryl?s husband. Also participating will be Paul Montgomery, John Dannreuther and Mark Borckardt, who played key roles in finding and authenticating the historic rarity, one of just five known.
Two other Walton coins will be on display, including a $1 Bechtler gold piece.
Regular business agenda items to be conducted by the ANA board of governors at their meetings will include adopting a budget for the next fiscal year starting April 1 and evaluating the budgetary performance of the present year.
The board will also take up the issue of modifications to the organization?s bylaws. It has already been announced that discussions will be held, but votes on the bylaw revisions will be postponed until the summer convention Aug. 8-12 in Milwaukee, Wis. See the schedule of events on Page 24 for times and locations of the board meetings.
