An Original Series No. 1 $1 from the First National Bank of Hilsborough, N.H., with the Jeffries-Spinner signature combination sold for a hammer price of $70,000 in Lyn Knight Currency Auctions’ Memphis IPMS 2014 auction. The note, featured in a front-page story by Peter Huntoon in the June issue of Bank Note Reporter, is the first serial No. 1 Jeffries-Spinner national to come on the market. It was graded XF/AU.
“I believe this is the most important note I have had to offer in quite sometime,” Knight wrote in the catalog description. “When you take the rarest of the varieties possible by signature combination and add that to a gorgeous #1 note...Wow!” The note carried a pre-sale estimate of $30,000 to $60,000.
Bringing $65,000 was an 1880 $100 Legal Tender, Fr. 176, in EF 40.
“This outstanding $100 was acquired by our consignor as an AU from the May 2001 CAA auction for the then record price of $34,100,” Knight wrote. “It is every bit as significant today as it was then. It is still one of the top four pieces extant, with no known uncirculated examples. Only 13 notes exist in all grades.”
