African adventurer’s fantasy issue, rare Latin American, and a 1880 U.S. coin proof set with handwritten note make for a varied coin auction at Freeman’s in Philadelphia at 10a.m. April 1.

The auction is comprised predominantly of two Philadelphian collections. The coins range in origin from Morocco and Mexico to the Gold Coast and Peru.

In the 1970s, as the economy was suffering, a Philadelphia man decided to invest in coins; gold was increasing in value, and he had an eye for the rare and the obscure. He chose wisely, resulting in a unique collection of 150 international coins. Highlights of the collection are as varied as they are interesting.

Perhaps the most exotic coin in the collection is the 1894 Foutah Djalon 5 francs fantasy issue coin. The coin was minted by the French adventurer Count Oliveir de Santerval. The Count, more casually acknowledged as a type of freebooter, was aspiring to establish his own colony in Africa. Though the Count was unsuccessful in his establishment of the colony, his rare coins are a testament to his efforts and survive in extremely limited quantities today.

In addition, the auction will feature a U.S. proof set gifted from a Philadelphia coin collector in 1880 to his nephew for Christmas. The coin comes complete with the hand signed note inscribed on the original calling card of this member of a prominent Philadelphian family.
