Chet Krause, founder of Numismatic News, was honored with the Professional Numismatists Guild?s Lifetime Achievement Award Aug. 7.
?Since Oct. 13, 1952, when the first issue of Numismatic News was composed on the dining room table in his family?s home, Chet Krause of Iola, Wis., has been an important and influential leader in the hobby and profession,? said Robert Brueggeman, PNG executive director.
?Hundreds of periodicals, reference books and trade shows produced under his leadership have helped millions of collectors and dealers around the world. With gratitude and admiration for his devotion to numismatics and significant achievements, the Professional Numismatists Guild presents Chet Krause with the PNG Lifetime Achievement Award,? Brueggeman said.
Brueggeman presented the award to Krause during the PNG awards dinner at the Wisconsin Club in Milwaukee, Wis.
Also given that evening was the Significant Contribution Award, which new PNG president Gary Adkins presented to outgoing president Jeff Garrett. Garrett was recognized for his efforts on behalf of the organization during his presidency, as well as his earlier work supporting the hobby and the profession.
Author and researcher Robert A. Levinson was given the Robert Friedberg Literary Award for his book The Early Dated Coins of Europe 1234-1500. Rick Ponterio made the presentation.
Levinson?s reference provides the first comprehensive listing in chronological order by region, state and mint of all the known types of gold, silver and copper coins struck in medieval Europe dated 1500 or earlier.
PNG also bestowed its third annual Art Kagin Ambassador Award. The honor is named after the former PNG president who passed away in 2005. It went to Michael ?Killer? Kelly of Port St. Lucie, Fla., for his distinguished service as an advocate of numismatic goodwill and decades of assistance to collectors and dealers.
Kelly was unable to attend the event, so Robert Avena accepted the award on his behalf.
Recognition of 25-year members of PNG included Barry Stuppler and Garrett.
