PCGS compiles list of top slabs

The Professional Coin Grading Service added up its results for 2017 and revealed that the firm has graded 18 of the 20 coins with the highest prices as realized at public auctions.

But that wasn’t the end of the story. It then noted that after making the tally, “a portion of the Eric Newman Collection was offered by Heritage Auctions. Shortly after the sale, the Newman / Green / Newcomer 1861 CSA Half Dollar crossed to PCGS at the new owner’s request. That makes this Newman Half the 19th PCGS-graded coin of the 20 most valuable coins to sell at auction in 2017.”

Third-party grading has become a crucial element of the commercial coin market in the last 30 years.

“It really means a lot to PCGS that our grading and authentication services were used in dominating fashion for the most valuable coins selling at auctions again in 2017. In 2016, we were 20 for 20. This year, being 18 for 20 (including the entire top 10) shows that the rare coin market trusts PCGS implicitly,” said Don Willis, President of PCGS, a division of Collector’s Universe (NASDAQ:CLCT).
