Pay to shave the head of Miles Standish?

The generosity of coin collectors and dealers will be in the spotlight at 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Denver.

Well-known coin grader Michael “Miles” Standish will have his head shaved to raise money for the nonprofit Standish Foundation for Child & Family Centered Healthcare.

“I may also have a well-known, surprise guest getting his head shaved, too,” Standish said.

Standish is senior grader and vice president of Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

His wife, Andrea Mangione Standish, launched the foundation in 2010 to provide tools and training to healthcare providers around the world to alleviate the suffering of children.

She is a certified child life specialist.

The head shaving will occur at Booth 97, next to the ANA Business and Messaging Center at the entrance to the bourse floor in Hall F of the Colorado Convention Center.

Donations for this event are tax deductible.

Proceeds will be split evenly between the ANA and the foundation.

Checks should be made payable to the American Numismatic Association.

Donations will be accepted at the message center beginning on Aug. 1, opening day of the convention.

“Building strong relationships among community-based organizations is a hallmark of the American Numismatic Association. We are proud to partner with the Standish Foundation for Child & Family Centered Healthcare during the World’s Fair of Money in Denver,” said Kim Kiick, ANA executive director.

Though made prominent by his grading expertise, Standish is also co-author with former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti, of the 2012 reference book, “American Silver Eagles: A Guide to the U.S. Bullion Coin Program.”

Standish’s 2014 book, “Morgan Dollar: America’s Love Affair with a Legendary Coin,” was given the 2015 Numismatic Literary Guild award for Best Specialized Book.

He was honored in 2011 with the “Director’s Coin for Excellence” by then-Director of the United States Mint Edmund Moy.

Like many hobbyists, Standish began collecting at the age of nine in his home state of Michigan.

I can attest to the fact that he is an all-around great guy.
