Paige closer to Freedom medal

Award of the nation

Award of the nation?s highest award and decoration, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, came a step closer to being granted posthumously to Leroy Robert Satchel Paige May 2.

The Senate Committee on the Judiciary was discharged from consideration of S. Con. Res. 91, expressing the sense of Congress that the President should posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Paige, and that body then passed the resolution, sending it to the House.

The measure had been introduced earlier in the day to give recognition to the Negro Baseball League star pitcher, Paige, who died in 1982.

He had appeared in the baseball major leagues during the twilight of his career.
