Visitors to The Durham Museum in Omaha were greeted by ghosts, goblins and some historical figures come to life at its “Great Hall-oween” party Oct. 29.
Among them was collector Byron Reed, portrayed by Mitch Ernst of the Omaha Coin Club. The museum features a Byron Reed gallery.
Dressed in 19th century attire, Ernst handed out candy and told parents and children about Reed and his collection.
Ernst told them how Reed took a train from Omaha to New York in 1890 to purchase the famous 1804 dollar for $570. That same coin is now worth more than $3.5 million.
As children viewed the coins in Reed’s collection, they would start telling Ernest about their own collections of state quarters, pennies or nickels.
“What fun,” Ernst said. “It made me realize how many opportunities that there may be out there to share this hobby, and I was grateful this opportunity happened to me.”
More than 600 people visited the museum for the event.
