The 22 members of the Waukesha, Wis., Coin Club who braved torrential rains and detoured around flooded streets to attend their monthly meeting on June 2 were rewarded by a presentation by club member and current American Numismatic Association President Cliff Mishler.
Mishler spoke about a variety of topics including his own start as a coin collector at age 10, the benefits of belonging to coin clubs in general and the ANA in particular, the present status of the ANA, and the threat to the hobby posed by Chinese counterfeit coins pouring into the market.
Mishler emphasized the importance of being part of the hobby community of collectors, dealers, writers and publishers. He paraphrased John F. Kennedy in saying, “Ask not what your hobby can do for you. Ask what you can do for your hobby.”
After the presentation, Mishler answered questions and gave each present member an elongated cent commemorating the 50th annual Numismatist of Wisconsin show held in May in Iola, Wis.
Members then held a discussion regarding its club rejoining the ANA. The matter was put to a vote and approved.
