Mint output falls
U.S. Mint struck Native American dollar coins, according to the August report, but that addition was not enough to overcome reductions in all of the other denominations and designs. Overall August coin production declined by 26 percent from the month of July, to stand at 604.54 million pieces.
For the first time since March, the U.S. Mint struck Native American dollar coins, according to the August report, but that addition was not enough to overcome reductions in all of the other denominations and designs.
Overall August coin production declined by 26 percent from the month of July, to stand at 604.54 million pieces.
Native American dollar production was just a drop in the bucket. Some 1.96 million were struck in Philadelphia and 5.04 million in Denver for a total of 7 million coins, bringing the annual total to 34.72 million for 2011 thus far.
Most noticeable among the reductions in August was Presidential dollars. None was struck. This was only the second month in 2011 where that was so. The other month was February.
So far in 2011, the Mint has struck 223.16 million Presidential dollars. The one billion surplus Presidential dollars stored by the Federal Reserve made headlines during the summer, but no congressional action occurred to affect this year’s production schedule.
Quarter production fell to 14 million in August from 50.2 million in July, to bring the 2011 total to 248 million coins.
Dime output was reduced to 106.5 million coins from July’s 161.5 million. In 2011, output has now topped one billion, coming in at 1.0865 billion coins.
For the nickel, the decline was less sharp. In August, 92.64 million were produced, down from 110.16 million in July. So far in 2011, 690.96 million have been struck.
Cent production was slimmed by 90.8 million coins to 384.4 million in August.
So far in 2011, cent output stands at 3.26374 billion coins, approximately 59 percent of this year’s total coin production total.
There was no August half dollar production. All 2011 half dollars were struck in January.
