Another Memorial Day has peacefully come and gone again thanks to the veterans of the past and present. Around here in Central Wisconsin there are two decent flea markets every summer weekend and we hit both of them. These days one can’t expect much in flea market finds anymore. This weekend was a bit better than most and I picked up a home town tavern token, a die struck counterfeit coin from Ecuador, a Japanese personal size soldier’s flag and most surprising of all, a North Korean Military Merit Medal Type 1 complete with mounted ribbon. The type 1 has the full figure soldier while the type 2 has the half length figure of a soldier. I guess it is only fitting that a medal, probably captured and brought back by an American veteran from America’s “Forgotten War” shows up this weekend to remind us that the Korean War has not yet officially ended.
