A silver Libertas Americana medal dated 1781 but produced in 1782 that the Professional Coin Grading Service graded AU-55 brought $80,500 at the official Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo auction conducted by Stack’s Bowers Galleries March 29-April 1.
Marketing manager Kris Briggs identified it as a highlight of the sale that included 4,250 U.S. coin lots, 850 paper money lots and 2,500 world coin lots.
The firm’s president, Chris Napolitano ,was particularly pleased to offer this Betts-615 piece and other historic medals.
Overall, results totaled approximately $13.7 million, including the 15 percent buyers’ fees, but the totaling process for the results of online offerings were still going on as this paper went to press.
