Sales of silver American Eagle one-ounce bullion coins picked up in the opening days of May.

Some 980,000 coins have been sold. This compares to 835,000 sold in the entire month of April and 1,615,000 in the month of March.

Sales of silver Eagles have not quite reached 10 million so far in 2017. The total is 9,772,500.

The price of an ounce of silver closed out 2016 at $15.936 an ounce. Since then it rose above $18.50 and then retreated almost to the starting point. It was $16.151 at the close of commodity trading on May 10.
