Manley purchased the material at the Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers auction that was held Jan. 12, 2013.

The Clain-Stefanellis were curators of the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution.

Students of controversy will be interested to see one collection of items that provides insights into the 1950 controversy regarding the Franklin Hoard of U.S. Assay Office gold coins and ingots allegedly found in Arizona. The donation included related reports by nationally recognized numismatists John J. Ford Jr., Walter Breen, Don Taxay and Eric P. Newman. It also includes correspondence between Ford, Breen, Valdimir Clain-Stefanelli and Mint Director Eva Adams, the ANA said.

Manley’s donation also includes a working draft of Elvira Clain-Stefanelli’s Beauty and Lore of Coins and her original typewritten manuscript of Numismatics: An Ancient Science.

The ANA said that once the items have been cataloged, they will be available for study in the ANA’s Dwight N. Manley Numismatic Library at 818 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, Colo. Visit the organization’s website at www.money.org.
