The awards are given at the annual Ambassador Breakfast, which is sponsored by Numismatic News for previous award winners. There are many of them.
Given annually since 1974 by this hobby paper, the Ambassador Award was created to recognize the hard working volunteers at the local, state, regional and national levels who might not otherwise be noticed.
While every Ambassador’s resume is a little different, it is amazingly easy to see who is a likely candidate for the award.
Who is the first to arrive and the last to leave when a local show needs setting up. Who most often gives the program because nobody else feels comfortable standing before a group and engaging in public speaking. Who has turned into a secretary for life or a president for life because nobody else wants to take on the job?
Or how about the unsung role that the newsletter editor plays? This position is usually taken for granted until the club is trying to find another one.
Other individuals have made their way in the hobby by writing articles, assembling and displaying exhibits, or by becoming an exhibit judge?
Many Ambassador Award winners over time seem to become a jack of all hobby trades because their willingness to help the organization and the hobby overcomes any particular reluctance to get into a new role.
There. Has somebody come to mind?
Fill out the form, or write it up in an e-mail and send it to us here in Iola, Wis., by April 30.
We understand that you don’t necessarily know everything about someone you feel is deserving, it is amazing how clear a picture emerges by simply sitting down and trying to answer the questions as best you can. It doesn’t hurt to call another hobby friend or two to try to complete the picture.
Once we have received the nominations, we will go to work and assemble a ballot with short hobby biographies for all of the nomination. We will then send it out to all of the current holders of the award.
They will send in their votes to us, which we will tabulate and then declare the winners.
We have always believed that other award recipients are the best judges of the qualifications of others.
While that is true of the final ballot, I should point out that anybody can make a nomination – and everybody should try to do so.
No one here in Iola can possibly know what goes on in all the organizations in the country (and the world) without help from the readers of Numismatic News.
Give us a hand and get the ball rolling for a deserving hobbyist. I know the hardest thing to do is just to get started, but perhaps by recalling all that a deserving hobbyist has already done, you will conclude that it is the least you can do for someone who has already enriched numismatics and your time in it.
