A sellout was declared March 26 by the U.S. Mint for the two-roll sets of the Lincoln Birthplace cents, the first of the four new designs to be issued in 2009.
Total quantity purchased was 97,149 sets.
Price of the set was $8.95 plus a $4.95 shipping and handling charge for each order.
The sellout occurred in less than two weeks. The rolls went on sale March 13, a month after the formal debut of the Birthplace reverse design Feb. 12 at Lincoln’s Kentucky birthplace.
Because of the sluggishness in releasing the new cents to circulation, collector anxiety about obtaining them has helped push prices up on the secondary market.
