Kolbe sale fetches $75,000

One of the highlights in the sale was a substantial run of Zeitschrift fur Numismatik, 28 of the first 31 volumes, 1874-1914, which sold for $10,925.

Featuring works from the library of the Vladimir and Elvira Clain-Stefanelli, George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books’ Sept. 29, Auction Sale 97 of Important Numismatic Books realized more than $75,000.

The Stefanellis were longtime curators of the Smithsonian Institution’s numismatic department.

One of the highlights in the sale was a substantial run of Zeitschrift für Numismatik, 28 of the first 31 volumes, 1874-1914, which sold for $10,925.

Mint Director’s A.L. Snowden’s copy of Edwin Johnson’s rare 1882 work on Bolen medals was avidly sought after, selling for $1,495.

Amon Carter’s leatherbound edition of B. Max Mehl’s 1941 William Forrester Dunham auction of rare American coins, featuring documentation on Carter’s 1822 half eagle, brought $3,680 though estimated at $1,250.

All prices cited include the 15 percent buyer premium. A few copies of the sale catalog are still available and may be obtained, along with a prices realized list, by sending $15 to Kolbe.
