‘King of Coins’ featured in sale

An 1804 dollar will be offered in Heritage Auction Galleries

An 1804 dollar will be offered in Heritage Auction Galleries? April 16-19 sale at the Central States Numismatic Society convention in Illinois.

Any 1804 dollar is a headline item when appearing at auction. This 1804 dollar is a Class I example, struck in 1834 or 1835 for use in diplomatic presentations.

Heritage catalogers said that there are 15 1804 dollars known, eight designated Class I, and just five of those eight are available to collectors.
The Queller example has been graded Proof-62 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp.

A pedigree for the coin provided by Heritage traces back to Joseph J. Mickley, who owned the coin around 1850. It then went to William A. Lilliendahl, and then to William Sumner Appleton, who bequeathed it to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1903. The society sold it around 1970 to a private collector, from whom Reed Hawn acquired it a few years later. Queller bought it in 1993.

Heritage will be offering Signature and Platinum Night sessions of coins at the CSNS convention in Rosemont, Ill., as well as paper money.

?David Queller?s silver dollar collection represents four decades of dedicated collecting,? said Heritage vice president Leo Frese. He grew up during the 1930s and bought his first Red Book in 1954, but didn?t begin collecting coins until the 1960s. His first collecting interest was half dollars. By the late 1960s, he had expanded his collection into the dollar denomination and the search became a family effort.

Other highlights include an 1802 dollar graded Proof-65 Cameo by Professional Coin Grading Service and an 1870-S Seated Liberty dollar, NGC XF-40.

The Queller collection offers about 100 different Bust dollars, a complete set of Seated Liberty dollars with most in Mint State, a complete set of proof Seated Liberty dollars, a complete set of Trade dollars and a complete set of proof Morgan dollars, as well as a complete set of Peace dollars in Mint State.

In addition to the Queller collection, Heritage?s Central States auction will also feature Part 3 of the Seated proofs of the Kaufman collection.

Paper money to be auctioned includes the Thomas M. Flynn collection of U.S. and Canadian currency, with every lot of this consignment to be offered without reserve bid levels.

Flynn?s U.S. paper collection totals more than 1,000 notes, including rarities such as a high-grade $100 ?Watermelon? Treasury Note pedigreed to the collection of Amon Carter Jr. as well as a $50 National Gold Bank Note coincidentally also obtained directly from Carter. Flynn material includes a complete set of large-size Federal Reserve Bank Notes by Friedberg number.

Small-size notes include a Series 1933 $10 Silver Certificate with fancy serial number 999 and an uncirculated Series 1928D $1 Silver Certificate star note.

Fractional Currency and Military Payment Certificates are also offered.
Flynn?s Canadian note collection has many Dominion of Canada and Bank of Canada rarities and several Canadian Chartered Bank Notes.

Sale catalogs will be available around March 26 and may be viewed online at www.ha.com and, for the paper money portion, at www.CurrencyAuctions.com.
