We collectors are living in an age of gold.
This week’s numismatic chapter regarding the precious metal will be written by a Sept. 15 auction to be conducted by Kagin’s Auction.
The sale will be called in conjunction with the Santa Clara, Calif., Coin Expo as well as online.
I did.
You won't be disappointed even if you don't collect gold.
The firm headed by Dr. Donald H. Kagin has deep roots in numismatics and gold.
It should.
Don wrote the book Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States.
If you like sunken treasure, Kagin’s Auction is offering six gold ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America, which sank off North Carolina in a hurricane in 1857.
The firm says bidders can vie for one ingot apiece from the California Gold Rush assayers, Blake & Co., Harris, Marchand & Co., Henry Hentsch and Justh & Hunter.
Two ingots, including one of the smaller ones available, are offered from Kellogg & Humbert.
The latter two partners were involved earlier in minting pioneer gold coins for the U.S. Assay Office, which preceded the U.S. Branch Mint in San Francisco.
There is a complete nine-piece set of Augustus Humbert U.S. Assay Office $50 gold pieces.
The will be sold individually.
“This is the first time in over a decade that all the $50 gold varieties are for sale in an unreserved public auction,” Kagin said.
According to the catalogers, the Yerba Buena (the original name of San Francisco) Collection was assembled over 25 years and comprises some of the finest specimens known, including examples from the Clifford-Kagin collection.
This collection was one of the most comprehensive pioneer gold collections prior to it being privately sold in the early 1990s.
These huge gold pieces are a glimpse into the rich history of the Califonia Gold Rush.
Other California gold coins range from fractionals to large pieces from private issuers.
Federal gold will be highlighted by a Proof-65+ Cameo 1860 $5 graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
It was once part of the Harry Bass Collection.
A set of Walking Liberty half dollars will dazzle collectors of non-gold U.S. coins.
Hobo nickels collectors will find much to their liking in this auction.
Before you leave the firm’s website, take another look at the catalog cover.
It is an original work of art by a 26-year-old Sandra Deiana of Italy.
She is a student at the School of Art and Medal Making at the Italian State Mint.
She triumphed over other artists in a design competition.
Congratulations to her.
For now, though, time is running short.
Get ready to bid.
There are three sessions to the auction.
The first is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.
The second is on the same date at 7 p.m.
The third is an online-only session ending at 5 p.m. Sept. 18.
Kagin’s Auction is a division of Kagin’s, Inc.
