Arlie R. Slabaugh, 82, longtime collector, numismatic journalist and cataloger, died Sept. 26.
He served as editor and associate editor of Lee Hewitt?s Numismatic Scrapbook publication in the 1950s and 1960s. He then worked for The Franklin Mint for several years as information director, archivist and, after retirement, a consultant.
He described himself as primarily a collector of tokens, medals and paper money.
Mr. Slabaugh wrote articles published in Numismatic News and Bank Note Reporter until he was well into his 70s.
His catalog Confederate States Paper Money, presently in its tenth edition, is highly regarded for some of its information beyond basic type listings.
He served as editor or associate editor of more than 10 publications, including the Token and Medal Society?s TAMS Journal.
He cataloged emergency money issues, and also U.S. commemorative coinage, with the latter including information about original holders and related items at a time when these things were not as hotly sought as they are today.
He received Krause Publications? Numismatic Ambassador Award in 1989.
For years Mr. Slabaugh had lived in Springfield, Pa. Most recently he resided at an assisted living facility in Gradyville, Pa.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Keech and Wendy Turner. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Douros, and wife Marjorie.
Services were held Sept. 29. Mr. Slabaugh was buried at Edgewood Memorial Park in Concord, Pa. The family was served by the James F. Knoetgen Funeral Home of Morton, Pa.
