The Expert

Hitting the market is a new book by Q. David Bowers. Called The Expert’s Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins, the book tackles everyone’s dream of making money in the rare coin market.

The book’s dust jacket teases readers with the reminder that Baltimore banker Louis Eliasberg invested $400,000 in coins and it turned into $40 million. Harold Bareford put $13,832 in his collection and it sold for $1.2 million.

In both cases, the ownership period was measured in multiple decades.

For readers who do not have personal memories of the hobby over many years, Bowers provides a chapter that offers a handy overview of the varying conditions collectors have faced from the 1930s introduction of the Whitman Pennyboard to the the present time.

In 688 pages, much more history, advice and important topics are packed.
The book is priced at $29.95 each. Copies are for sale in book stores, coin shops and online at www.whitmanbooks.com.
