Hobby reaction takes out $3

A rare 1870-S $3 gold piece was headed to the auction block in early June. And then it wasn’t.

Four Seasons Auction Gallery of Alpharetta, Ga., announced May 16 that the coin, which it said was one of only two known to exist, was expected to fetch between $2 million and $4 million.

But one day later, the coin was removed from the firm’s website along with any mention of the auction. Attempts to reach the company for comment were unsuccessful.

The numismatic community had raised questions about the authenticity of the coin, which had not been submitted to a grading company.

The one known 1870-S $3 gold coin, valued at $4 million, is part of the Harry W. Bass Collection that is on display at the American Numismatic Association museum in Colorado Springs, Colo.
